Chapter Six

AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, or days...who knew? Tawny woke up, starving.

Dieting on rice cakes and spring water for a month—kind of starving. Her eye’s popped open. “This ship better be stocked with hamburgers, or steak and potatoes. I need food. Meat. No space dehydrated shit,” she groused.

Hawk turned to face her and gather her in his arms. “Good morning to you, my sweet, dulcet-toned love.”

Tawny rolled her eyes and pushed him away. “Don’t touch me. Not now, not several days from now. And if I walk funny and you laugh, I’m cutting your private parts off with a rusty knife.”

At the gleam in his eye, Tawny held both hands out. “I mean it, Hawk. No touchy. I need food. Well.” She looked down at her naked body as she climbed out of bed. “Clothes and food.” Then she blinked. “I don’t have clothes here. What am I going to wear, Hawk? All my clothes are at home and we’re clear out in space. I can’t chase...whatever it is we’re chasing...naked!” her voice rose higher with each word. She was about to panic.

“Your clothes are all right here, Tawny,” Hawk said as he reached over and pushed on a small disc and a door hidden in the wall slid open. This is the dressing room and bathroom. “Or at least some of your clothes,” he amended. “I had the Helper bring what I thought you’d need when he shut down the store.”

Tawny was walking toward the bathroom, but she stopped and stared at Hawk. Opened her mouth, closed it. Tried again, “What do you mean shut down the store?”

Hawk shrugged, “Your job is Guardian of the Realms now and you don’t exist anymore in your time-period. Your store is no longer there, your building occupied by someone else. I explained you couldn’t live there anymore, Tawny.”

“I didn’t think you meant now. I thought I’d have time to pack things up, say goodbye. What do you mean, I don’t exist in my time-period?” she demanded.

“You are a Guardian. The reality in your Realm was shifted so you never existed—this was done so no one will search for you. Or be blamed for your disappearance. Your money and assets have been absorbed into the Guardian funds, you have access to anything you need or want, without having to worry about money.”

She closed her eyes. Her first reaction was to protest, to be upset. But she waited and thought about it for a minute. Was she troubled to find out that her entire life up to this point was now erased? Listening to her inner bitch, she sighed and relaxed. No.

She had no living relatives and while she loved her little store in the beginning, it began to weigh on her. This really wasn’t worth getting upset about.

And now she got to be a Guardian. She wasn’t sure what that meant yet, but it came with some awesome benefits, like mind-altering sex. So, solid no, it didn’t bother her that her prior life had been erased.
